Continuous Improvement Culture Coaching

Leaders create culture by accident or by design.

Culture by Design Partners helps leaders build an aligned, engaged, and empowered culture to achieve orders-of-magnitude performance gains. The Culture by Design methodology is proven across a Shingo Prize–winning operation and enterprise transformations spanning 120,000 employees.

Culture by Design Partners — Vision, Strategy, Problem Solving, Improved Way, Share & Set, New Culture — It's all about the people. Align, Engage & Empower.
"You have great people outperforming poor systems every day. If leaders create the right circumstances, your people will rise higher than you can imagine."
— The belief behind everything we do
Our Approach

Culture is not an abstract mystery, but rather a defined set of beliefs, behaviors and artifacts. It's designable.

Culture is the direct, observable output of what leaders repeatedly do. These repeated behaviors create experiences for those they lead. These experiences create beliefs that form behaviors, which output results. Design leadership behaviors to create designed experiences, to create a designed culture.

1

Experiences

Leaders design repeated, problem-solving experiences for their people — using ideal thinking, principles and tools.

2

Beliefs

Those experiences shape what people genuinely believe about what's safe, valued, and true.

3

Behaviors

New beliefs drive new, repeated behaviors — the way people actually work and act.

4

Artifacts

New behaviors produce new systems, tools, and results — sustained, and durably higher.

Every engagement is built to move your organization toward one destination: a workforce that is genuinely aligned, engaged, and empowered.

AAligned
EEngaged
EEmpowered
A

Aligned

Everyone understands and pursues the same vision of winning — for the customer, the business, and themselves — so effort adds up instead of pulling in different directions.

E

Engaged

People bring their full effort, attention, and ideas to the work because they trust that their voice matters and that problems actually get solved.

E

Empowered

People have the tools, authority, and confidence to see problems and make better choices every day, without waiting to be told what to do.

"What we observed is this is an amazing company. The most significant thing we see is their ability to enable and engage their people."

How This Started

A phone call in the Canadian Rockies

In 2005, our founder was a week into the backcountry when a satellite phone call changed everything: a promotion into manufacturing, a field he had no experience in. What followed was an accident of humility — two engineers with no fixed way of doing things, discovering that a single principle, flow, could turn a struggling product line into the best-performing one in the business in days, not years.

That discovery scaled into a culture. Employee-driven improvements grew from about five a year to nearly 63,000. The operation earned the Shingo Prize, and — more telling — sustained its rate of engagement through two major market downturns, when disengagement would have been the easy path.

Culture by Design Partners exists to teach that same methodology to other leaders, so it doesn't take twenty years to learn.

About Us

Built by practicing operators, not classroom consultants

20+ years building cultures, not just installing tools

Eric Pope has led enterprise operational and cultural transformation across manufacturing, engineering, supply chain, and field operations — from a single struggling product line at US Synthetic to a continuous improvement deployment spanning 120,000 employees in over 100 countries at ChampionX and SLB. Culture by Design Partners was founded in 2014, first to retain and develop lean leadership capability during an industry downturn, then expanded as other organizations sought guidance after visiting US Synthetic as a benchmark operation.

Our consultants are practicing operational leaders, not full-time trainers. Culture by Design Partners has built a network of experienced transformation coaches — people who have run real operations and led real turnarounds — available to support your organization. We work alongside your leaders and teams, teaching as we go, rather than doing the improvement work for you. That distinction is the whole point: it's the difference between a culture that outlasts the consultant and one that doesn't.

How We Work

The leader's journey, hear, see, do, teach

We guide leaders through a set of real, on-site experiences. As leaders rise, their teams rise with them — discovering a better way together, not being handed one.

1

Learn the Business, Build Trust

We start by learning your business and your current culture, and recognizing what's already good — steering away from a "fix them" mindset toward the energy of becoming the best in the world at what you do.

2

Align the Team

Through simulations and activities, we align your team to a shared vision of winning — in life, business, and customer — and lay the foundation for your run-the-business system.

3

See Problems Together

Value stream maps, 5S, visual management, and standard work help your team see opportunity before trying to solve it — order to cash, mapped together.

4

Solve Problems Together

We coach and teach problem-solving methods for both enterprise-level kaizen events and small daily improvements, building cross-functional and local improvement systems.

5

Coach Leaders' Routines

We coach leaders to build, execute, assess, and improve their own standard work — the daily routines that actually run the transformation.

6

Benchmark & Study Trips

Off-site field trips — from Japan study trips to Shingo Prize plant visits — that expand what your leaders believe is possible.

Between on-site visits, we provide remote coaching and follow-up, plus quarterly gemba walks, culture checks, and alignment reviews to keep the pace honest.

Engagement Options

Pay as you go, at the right pace

Every engagement runs on a flat, all-inclusive monthly subscription — not a one-time project fee. Your subscription combines cadence-based on-site improvement events with ongoing remote and/or on-site coaching and follow-up between visits, customized to a pace that fits your organization. Most engagements start at a higher pace, then taper as your leaders grow more confident running the work themselves.

Subscription tiers are built around your organization's size, pace, and current culture — from a single site to an enterprise-wide rollout. Tell us where you're starting, and we'll recommend the right cadence.
